Sibling newborn photos are something I know from experience to be very near and dear to a mom’s heart. I can’t tell you how often a mom will reach out to book newborn photos for her growing family and request “as many sweet sibling shots as possible, please!” I specialize in photographing families with young kids, so today I’m sharing examples of some of the ways I love to capture sibling photos during my newborn sessions. Prepare yourself for a whole lot of sweetness!!

The Perfect Lighting to Capture Your Family Memories

I absolutely love my natural light studio for newborn sibling photos! When families reach out to book their newborn photoshoot, they have the option to do their newborn photos in my studio or in their home. But the truth is I typically end up with more beautiful sibling photos and more variety of shots when I do a session in my studio because every sweet moment happens in beautiful light. When working with young toddlers who are constantly on the move, sometimes I only get a split second here and there throughout the session when the toddler swoops into the frame to give the baby a quick kiss before dashing off again to play. So I’m always ready with my fast shutter speed to freeze those sweet moments when they happen!

Sibling Newborn Photos on the Bean Bag

Young siblings aren’t always able to hold the baby safely and securely for a photo like an adult or older sibling could. The safety of the baby always comes first during my newborn photoshoots, so over the years I’ve found numerous ways to capture sweet photos with young toddlers loving on their baby brother or sister. One of the ways I love best is laying the baby on my bean bag and inviting their sibling(s) to interact with the baby. I ask siblings to give their baby brother or sister a kiss, touch their toes, count their fingers, or give them a tickle. This way the baby is safe and secure, and the opportunities for siblings to interact with the baby are endless! I take bean bag photos from a variety of angles and always deliver images in both color and black & white. But I’ll admit I especially love to use backlighting for these types of sibling photos on the bean bag because it creates a beautiful black & white silhouette that emphasizes the emotions and connection between the sibling and their baby brother or sister.

Sibling Newborn Photos on a Bed

The bed is another beautiful option for young siblings to snuggle with their baby brother or sister. I lay the baby on the bed so they’re safe and secure, and siblings can lay or sit with the baby for photos. There’s a little trick I use whenever I’m working with energetic toddlers to keep them in the frame for a bit longer, and the secret is CHEERIOS. I always keep little bags of Cheerios on hand in my studio, so laying Cheerios on or around the baby can buy me those few extra moments I need to capture a beautiful sibling shot before the toddler shoots out of the frame, off on another adventure.

Sibling Newborn Photos From Above

One of the best things about taking newborn siblings photos from above is that it can be done anywhere. I do this in my natural light studio, but this is also one of my go to sibling shots at my in home newborn sessions. I lay down a blanket next to a big window with plenty of soft, indirect light, grab a nice soft pillow, and capture some sweet sibling snuggles from above. For this shot, I often swaddle the baby. This way, young toddlers don’t have to manage a wiggly baby and we can focus entirely on capturing those sweet expressions and adorable little snuggles.

Sibling Newborn Photos With Mom

All of my newborn sessions include both individual newborn pictures as well as all the family combinations, so my newborn sessions are essentially a combination of baby photos and family photos combined into one. Whenever I’m doing individual photos of the baby or other combinations, siblings get a chance to take breaks to play and have a snack throughout the session. But anytime they’re ready and excited to snuggle, siblings are always welcome to come back in the frame! If I’m taking photos with just mom and the baby, I get a variety of shots and then invite siblings to join in if they want to. Whether mom is cradling the baby in her arms, or I’m doing backlit photos with mom and baby on the bean bag or bench, or mom is laying on the bed and snuggling with the baby, siblings are always encouraged to share in the love!

Sibling Newborn Photos With Dad

A newborn session isn’t complete until we get some sweet Daddy snuggles as well! Newborn sessions are already full of transitions for the baby. Babies switch outfits and arms more often during a newborn photoshoot than a normal day at home, for sure. So once the baby gets snuggled in and cozy, I try to capture as much variety as possible before transitioning to something new. Whenever it’s Dad’s turn to hold the baby, I get a bunch of Daddy & baby photos first and then invite older siblings to join in as well. I’ve yet to find a toddler who doesn’t love climbing on Daddy’s back when he’s laying on the bed with the baby, so that is one of my go to Daddy shots with energetic toddlers 🙂
