Master Newborn Photographer – NAPCP

NAPCP Master Newborn Photographer Certification

I’m so excited and honored to share that I’ve been awarded the Master Newborn Photographer Certification by the NAPCP!

NAPCP Master Newborn Photographer Certification

The National Association of Portrait and Child Photographers, or NAPCP, is an association whose mission is to promote and support the artistry and integrity of professional portrait and child photographers. As described on the NAPCP website, “Unlike our photography competitions, Master Photographer Certification is not about having images that are “Best in Show”. Newborn photography certification verifies that you are a master of your craft, that you have consistent work, that you follow health and safety guidelines when photographing your little clients and that parents and businesses that hire you know what to expect. Master Photographers get the job done and get it done right. We know that’s worth a round of applause!” In addition to submitting a portfolio of images for evaluation by a panel of judges, the NAPCP also requires applicants to pass the Newborn Master Certification Course in order to ensure that all Newborn Master Photographers are conducting business safely and understand the special needs of their littlest clients.

This fall, I submitted a portfolio of 25 images that I felt represents my work as a newborn photographer. Overall, each image in my portfolio had to showcase a different family, pose, setting, composition, or lighting scenario to demonstrate a mastery of the specific niche of newborn photography. Even though I specialize in family-centered newborn photography, at least 15 of the images were required to be of the newborn only with no other family members. While this wasn’t a challenge as I’ve had the privilege of photographing so many adorable babies over the years and pride myself in capturing their many sweet movements and expressions, it did push me to curate a portfolio with a less family-centered focus than I naturally would. Five of the images needed to include at least one parent, and at least three of the images were required to include siblings, so I took these opportunities to incorporate the family snuggles I love so much!

The Judges’ Feedback

In their feedback, the judges commended my ability to capture the connection between babies and their family, which made my heart so full: “Your portfolio overall demonstrates a consistent style and quality and deserves an excellent rating. You are particularly adept at artfully capturing the connection between baby and his/her family members and the emotions that it evokes! In addition, your backlit images in particular demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to control light to create flattering imagery.”
